I live in a family of klutzes. Most of our coffee mugs were missing handles. All of our surviving plates had cracks and chips in them and we only had one bowl left. We had to do something about out dish situation, a situation that we were causing. I went on a hunt for indestructible plates.
Old enamel camping plates came to mind. You could throw those around a room without them getting a dent. I thought that even my boys couldn't break them. They seemed like the perfect solution.
They were also relatively safe, as far as chemicals leeching into foods. Except for one thing. The enamel often chips. As I read reviews of the camping plates online, I read that the more people used them, the more prone they were to chipping. Where we would be using them for everyday use, this seemed like a real problem to me.
The other problem I found was availability and selection. My step-mom has been using old enamel plates for years. Hers are real sturdy and don't chip much. She says she sees them at yard sales all the time. Yet, last yard sale season, neither one of us came across a single plate. It seems that they aren't as ubiquitous now as when she first collected hers.
I found the selection online to be lacking as well. The camping sets all came in either red or blue. That was okay, but not ideal. The real problem with the camping sets seemed that they were not made to the quality standards that the older plates that I was looking for were. I could get custom plates in a color of my choosing at the quality level I desired for around 0, but that wasn't what I wanted. I wanted cheap, indestructible plates.
Needless to say, I did not find them. I ended up going with a set of camping plates that were not enamel. We have had a few drops, but no serious accidents yet. They are a sturdy plastic set. It's funny. In all of the years of broken dishes, none of our plastic cups broke. I hadn't considered plastic until I was poking around the dishware options on Amazon.
Plastic dishware may seem very childish to some, and they are probably right. What kind of family needs to replace their dish set with plastic dishes? Well, a family full of boys for one. I'd like to say it was all them, but my husband and I haven't dared to own a glass cup since our last one broke around our first anniversary. We've come to terms with who we are. We'd rather have plastic dishes than cracked and chipped dishes.
